Twelve birds, one long Finnish year
Every month gets its own bird and its own weather. January opens on a great tit puffed up against falling snow; by April a pair of snowy owls are nested together in cloudberry blossom, and come June a duck has fallen asleep in a field gone yellow with dandelions.
Summer turns playful — three ducklings caught mid-laugh in July, a flock of hens circling a garden frog in August — before the year cools again: a round-eyed owlet among maple-red leaves in September, a raven watching quietly through snow-heavy spruce in October, a waxwing plucking frost-covered rowan berries in November. December closes the year the way it opened, with two bullfinches settled on a straw sheaf and a red ribbon.
Each page carries the real content of a Finnish wall calendar — week numbers, moon phases, the year's holidays — printed beneath a painting made specifically for that place in the year, not a stock illustration dropped into a grid.
