Artist's note: "When I started sketching “Medusa” I only had the lady in my mind. Then, as I proceeded with the sketch she was accompanied with a cat, a crow and the spiders. It quite often happens that the final idea for an artwork reveals itself to me only when I put it on the paper. It’s like I don’t know what I’m about to create until I actually create it and see it for myself."

The Shelter of Leaves

I was so out of my comfort-zone painting this! The Shelter of Leaves was one of the very first paintings where I gave up using black outlines that had previously made the coloring easier for me. In addition to that, the original painting is huge and in several cases I needed to be very fast with my brush to get the color to have the desired effect on a large area of paper. I still remember how I was literally sweating, my hands trembling because I was so afraid I’d ruin the whole painting. I had never really painted anything like this before: with all my earlier artworks I had always felt relatively safe with my usual way of painting smaller areas with more details. Now I had to abandon the details and use a big brush to make wide brushstrokes fast. I was convinced painting this way would make a mess and I’d have to start all over again. To my surprise, this didn’t happen and so I started to learn that even when done hurriedly, watercolor can produce great result. Stepping out of my comfort zone like this has greatly increased my trust in watercolors and my own skills.

Artist's note: "Starting on this painting, I had just gotten a new roll of watercolor paper. This paper was behaving very strangely and didn’t blend the colors the way it should’ve. Very soon I found out I had been sent wrong paper and the roll was replaced. Still, I managed to finish this owl pretty much the way I wanted. It was a definite out-of-my-comfort-zone experience and once I received the correct watercolor paper, painting on it was easier than ever."

Artist's note: "This painting was one of the very first large-scale artworks I ever created and was a real patience-test for me. There were a few times I wanted to give up or more or less needed to force myself to keep going. However, thanks to these big and detailed paintings my patience has improved incredibly."

Artist's note: "I originally wanted to make this horse a lot lighter, almost white, but he ended up quite deep blue instead. This painting taught me a very important lesson when it comes to watercoloring; always paint the first layer very light because, when it comes to watercolor, it’s easy to go darker, but very hard (sometimes impossible) to go lighter once the color has been put on the paper."

Artist's note: "A commissioned colored pencil drawing, based on an ink drawing with a similar idea that I had created earlier. Personally, I love the idea of a hedgehog having flowers on their back instead of spikes."

Artist's note: "Originally a t-shirt design. First my plan was to make the crescent moon one solid object with different patters running on its surface. However, this idea kept bothering me and as always, if something bothers me about an artwork, to me it is a sign I need to change something. So instead, I tried sketching the wolf laying on a crescent-shaped wooden "frame" with flowers tangled all over it. The bothersome feeling in my chest disappeared right away and I knew I should proceed with this idea instead."
